Kofi loved the quiet of the museum basement more than any other place. The air smelled of old wood and dry earth. Dust motes danced in the thin light from a high window. He wore his favorite faded blue shirt and scuffed sneakers, both covered in a fine layer of clay dust. His wide eyes scanned the shelves of unlabeled stones and bones. Today he sat on a low stool with a small brush and scraper. An unmarked slab of rock waited on the table before him. He hummed as he worked, carefully removing the soft clay that clung to the surface. Every scrape felt like a promise of discovery. The crumbling provincial museum had few visitors upstairs, but down here Kofi felt like a real explorer. He wondered what secrets the rock might hold.
As Kofi scraped deeper, a smooth ridge appeared under the clay. His heart beat faster. He brushed gently and revealed a long curved shape. It was a jawbone, perfectly preserved, with sharp teeth still set in place. The bone belonged to a juvenile spinosaurus, he felt sure of it. Then a soft glow began to rise from within the fossil. Pale blue light shimmered along the teeth and the edge of the jaw. Kofi froze, brush halfway to the table. “What is that?” he whispered. The light pulsed once, like a slow breath. He reached out a careful finger and touched the cool surface. The shimmer brightened under his skin. Something amazing was waking up right in front of him.
