A peek inside
The fjord kept secrets the way old mountains keep snow - quietly, and for a very long time. Sigrid knew this. She stood at the bow of the family skiff, copper braids tucked beneath her amber diving goggles, watching the dark water slide and shift below. Her brother Leif crouched beside her, dark curls wild in the salt wind, already tying the rope around his waist. "I'll reach the longhouse first," he said. Sigrid smiled, checked her goggles, and said nothing. Some races were won before a single stroke was swum.
They dropped beneath the surface together, and the world changed completely. The fjord swallowed its own noise. Cold teal water bloomed around them like ink spreading through silk, and the light above shrank to a pale, trembling coin. Then - there it was. The sunken longhouse rose from the silt below, its ancient timbers draped in soft barnacles, its carved dragon-prow still proud after a thousand years. Amber warmth glowed from within, and the water around the doorway shimmered as though breathing. Sigrid felt her heart knock against her ribs like a small, excited fist.
