Lirra tightened the straps of her sky-blue cloak as the wind whipped her curly hair. Below her, endless clouds drifted between the floating sky-islands of Aetheria. Skytalon, her faithful storm-drake, shifted his silver-grey wings and rumbled softly. Today she would attempt the journey her grandmother had spoken of for years. The Crystal Citadel waited beyond the Whispering Bridge of Echoes, holding answers about her family's ancient gift. Lirra had practiced flying for months, yet her heart still fluttered with both excitement and worry. "We can do this together," she whispered, patting Skytalon's warm neck. The great creature turned his head and blinked one bright eye in agreement. Far ahead, faint shimmering paths of mist marked the way. Lirra took a deep breath of cool high air and nodded. It was time to begin.
Skytalon launched from the rocky edge of their home island with a powerful beat of his wings. Cool air rushed past Lirra's cheeks as they soared higher into the bright morning sky. She leaned forward, feeling the strong muscles of the storm-drake beneath her. Islands floated like green jewels far below, connected by thin ribbons of cloud and light. Birds with rainbow feathers darted aside as the pair passed. Lirra remembered her grandmother's stories about the citadel and the wisdom kept inside its crystal halls. Her family had once served as keepers of sky-lore, but the path had been lost for a generation. Now she hoped to reclaim that connection. Skytalon tilted left to catch a rising current of warm air. Together they glided smoothly toward the distant shimmer that marked the bridge. Lirra's determination grew with every wingbeat.
