A peek inside

Thorne woke inside a hallway that should not exist. The walls pulsed like breathing stone, and distant waves crashed somewhere far above the ceiling. He rubbed his ink-stained fingers together, remembering the sketch he had drawn before bed of the coastal town he called home. Now every familiar street twisted into endless corridors of shadow and soft yellow lamplight. His messy dark hair stuck to his forehead as he took one careful step forward. Something scraped around the corner, not quite a footstep and not quite the settling of old bricks. Thorne swallowed hard and whispered his own name just to hear a human sound. The maze answered with a low hum that felt almost like curiosity. He was trapped inside the town's collective nightmare, and he knew it.

A figure stepped from the wall itself as if the stone had decided to become a girl. She was made of corridor shadow and flickering lamplight, her edges soft and shifting whenever Thorne blinked. Her eyes held the quiet glow of lanterns along the harbor at dusk. "You are awake inside the sleep," she said, her voice like pebbles rolling under tidewater. Thorne backed up until his shoulders touched cool stone. "Who are you?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady. She tilted her head, and dust motes danced through her hair like tiny stars. "I am Lunette. I am what the maze remembers when it dreams of company." He noticed that her hands left no fingerprints on the wall, only faint trails of light. Curiosity warred with caution inside his chest.
