Lira knelt at the edge of a calm pool in the whispering emerald marshes of Quorath. Silver-streaked hair framed her face while her starlit cloak caught the morning light. She loved spending hours here, dipping her hands into the water and watching frogs leap from pad to pad. The air smelled of wet earth and sweet blossoms. Her family lived in a wooden house raised on stilts, and every day after chores she wandered the nearby paths. She collected interesting leaves and sketched the shapes of drifting clouds. A faint silver sparkle danced on the far bank. She tilted her head and smiled. Whatever that light was, she wanted to see it up close.
She stepped carefully through the tall grass toward the sparkle. Suddenly a creature with glowing emerald fur bounded into view and sat before her. It was a moonfox, and its eyes held deep knowing. The fox shimmered and shifted into a sleek otter, then back again. “I am Quoril,” the moonfox said in a voice like soft wind. “The stars have chosen you, Lira. You must reach the Grove of Echoing Stars before the next full moon fades.” Lira blinked in surprise. She had heard legends of the grove but never thought they were real. Quoril paced in a circle. “Floating lily-pad roads will lead us there, yet crystal herons guard every turn with riddles.” Her heart beat faster. This was bigger than any adventure she had imagined.
