A peek inside

High above the endless blue, the crystal islands of Luminara drifted like slow, shining ships. Bridges of pure light linked one floating continent to the next, glowing softly whenever travelers stepped upon them. Zirath stood at the edge of Amber Spire, his crystalline tattoos catching the morning sun. Those glowing amber eyes scanned the horizon with practiced care. He was only sixteen, yet already a stern prism-keeper charged with guarding his faction’s share of the bridges. Every sparkle of light mattered. Without the bridges, families could not visit, traders could not trade, and the islands would drift alone forever. Today the light seemed thinner than usual. Zirath frowned, feeling the first quiet tug of worry in his chest.

Across the nearest light bridge, Lirux adjusted her prism-lens goggles and grinned. Silver hair whipped around her shoulders as she tested a beam with a clever twist of her wrist. She belonged to the rival Silver Vein faction, and she loved proving that her methods worked better than anyone else’s. Zirath considered her reckless. Lirux considered him far too rigid. Their factions argued constantly over who should control each bridge and how the light should be shared. Yet both keepers felt the same deep duty in their bones. When a bridge flickered, someone had to fix it. Lirux waved cheerfully at Zirath from afar. He did not wave back, though a small part of him almost wanted to.
