The sleek octopus-like scribe flexed iridescent violet arms, each tip sparkling like scattered stars. In one careful coil she held her glowing conch staff, which hummed with quiet power. Today marked the great Song Duel between rival shell-scribe guilds. Lirren belonged to the Violet Mantle Guild, keepers of deep-current tales. Her hearts beat fast with both excitement and worry. She had trained for seasons to weave songs that could shape how the tide remembered stories. Nearby schools of silver fish parted as she passed. The reef itself seemed to hold its breath. Lirren whispered a practice verse into her staff and watched violet notes swirl outward like living ink.
Across a clearing of coral arches, Sylphrix arrived with a swirl of current. The eel-bodied guild rival cut through the water in a flash of sharp silver scales. A spiral shell-horn gleamed at her side, ready to amplify every note. Sylphrix belonged to the Silver Spiral Guild, famous for swift and clever memory-songs. She locked eyes with Lirren and offered a challenging smile. "The tide will remember my verses longest," she called, her voice smooth as polished pearl. Lirren tightened her grip on the conch staff but answered with calm courtesy. Around them, younger scribes from both guilds gathered in excited clusters. Colorful banners of woven sea-silk fluttered from kelp stalks. The air of the reef hummed with anticipation. Neither scribe yet knew how this duel would change more than just a contest score.
