A peek inside

Elowen pressed her palm against the cool glass of Grandmother Mira's bedroom window and watched the last light of evening settle over the garden. Her silver-streaked braids hung heavy against her shoulders, and her amber eyes searched the familiar roses as if they might speak. Beside her, Cael closed the faded family locket around his neck and frowned at the quiet room. Grandmother breathed in shallow waves, lost somewhere none of them could reach. The house smelled of lavender tea and old paper, yet something new hummed beneath the floorboards. Elowen felt it first, a soft tug behind her ribs. Cael felt it next and reached for her hand. Neither spoke. The air shimmered once, twice, and the walls began to blur like watercolor left in rain.

When the shimmer cleared, Elowen and Cael stood inside a kitchen that looked exactly like Grandmother's, only brighter and strangely wrong. The clock on the wall ticked backward, then forward, then backward again. A loaf of bread sat forever half-sliced on the counter. Outside the window the same sparrow landed on the same branch over and over. Cael tightened his grip on the locket. This is her last memory, he whispered, looping forever. Elowen stepped closer to the table where a letter lay unfinished, ink still wet. She could almost hear Grandmother humming an old tune. Yet the edges of the room already frayed into gray mist. Something watched them from that mist, patient and hungry for the names they still remembered.
