A peek inside

Deep in the belly of the rusted generation ship Aurora, where pipes hissed and metal groaned like an old tired beast, lived a girl named Lyra. Soot streaked her cheeks and clung to her tangled hair, for she had been born among the engines and knew little else. The ship’s metallic heartbeat filled every hour of her days, a dull rhythm of survival that left no room for dreams. Adults hurried past her without a second glance, their patched uniforms grey as forgotten ash. Yet Lyra’s wide bright eyes still searched the shadows, wondering if anything beautiful could possibly remain aboard a vessel that had forgotten the taste of open sky.

One quiet cycle, while tracing a leaking coolant line no one else bothered to fix, Lyra noticed a seam in the bulkhead that did not belong. The metal there felt warmer, almost alive, and a faint sweet scent drifted through a hairline crack. Her heart hammered louder than the engines as she pried the panel loose with a stolen wrench. Beyond it stretched a narrow service tunnel lit by a single dying bulb. She crawled forward on scraped knees, curiosity burning brighter than fear, until the tunnel ended at a circular hatch sealed with ancient symbols no living crewmember could read. Something green flickered behind the cloudy viewport, and Lyra’s breath caught in her throat.
