A peek inside
Reed unlocked the tall oak doors of the Map Room and smiled as sunlight spilled across shelves of worn leather journals. Each book, he explained, held the careful notes of a real explorer who had sailed, walked, or ridden into places few people from their homeland had ever seen. Dust motes danced above a huge table map while Reed opened his satchel and set out a soft cloth for turning fragile pages. “These voyages did more than fill blank spaces,” he said. “They changed what the world knew about coasts, cultures, trade, and the true size of the Earth.” Today the journals would speak through Reed’s steady voice.
Reed lifted Marco Polo’s heavy journal and traced the route from Venice toward the court of Kublai Khan in China. Marco’s long journey along the Silk Road described cities, goods, and customs that many Europeans had only heard about in rumor. His written account, later copied and shared, gave readers richer knowledge of Asia’s vast lands and busy markets. Reed pointed to mountain passes and desert tracks inked beside the text. “Because Marco’s words traveled farther than he did,” Reed said, “people began to picture a connected world of trade and wonder.” The Map Room felt suddenly wider.
