A peek inside
Zara climbed the narrow stairs to the observatory rooftop, her blue jacket zipped against the cool evening air. Her braided hair swung gently as she stepped onto the flat roof and looked up. The sky was turning soft shades of orange and purple. She had always wondered why the bright day faded into darkness every single night. Her teacher had said Earth spun like a giant top, but Zara wanted to understand it for herself. Tonight she would watch carefully and think about every clue the sky offered. She placed her hands on the cold railing and took a deep breath. Somewhere far below, streetlights began to glow one by one. Zara smiled. She was ready to discover how day turns into night.
Earlier that afternoon the Sun had hung high and bright above the observatory dome. Zara had noticed how its light warmed her face and cast sharp shadows across the rooftop tiles. Now the same Sun sat lower near the horizon, painting long golden streaks. She knew the Sun did not truly race across the sky on its own. Something else had to be happening. Her science book spoke of Earth turning, yet the idea still felt mysterious. If our whole planet moved, why did the ground feel so still beneath her shoes? Zara tapped the railing and frowned in thought. She needed a clear picture of the spinning world she stood upon. Only then could the changing light make real sense.
