A peek inside
Dr. Theo Rivera stood in the bright museum exhibit hall, his green waistcoat neat and his warm smile easy. Maps curved across the walls, and model ships rested under soft lights. He greeted a group of visitors around nine to twelve years old. Today, he explained, they would follow real historical explorers and their voyages. These adventurers crossed seas, deserts, and ice with courage and careful planning. Their journeys changed maps and connected distant peoples. Each display would show a true person, a true route, and why that voyage still matters. Theo tapped a glowing world map. Ready your minds, he said. Discovery begins with the first step into the past.
Theo led them to a silk-road case filled with old coins and painted scrolls. This is Marco Polo, he said. In the late thirteenth century, the Venetian merchant travelled with his father and uncle across Asia to the court of Kublai Khan in China. Their long overland journey lasted many years and took them through mountains, deserts, and busy trading cities. Marco later described cities, goods, and customs he had seen. His account, written after he returned to Europe, helped readers imagine places far beyond their homes. Traders and mapmakers used such reports to expand knowledge of the wider world. Curiosity, Theo added, was Marco’s greatest tool.
