A peek inside
Sam was a curious ten-year-old boy with messy brown hair and a bright green T-shirt. He lived in a quiet small town where neighbours often walked past his garden gate. One bright morning he stopped outside the library and read a poster for a human body science kit. The kit explained how the heart pumps blood, how the lungs take in air, and how the stomach helps digest food. It cost thirty pounds. Sam had only a few coins in a jar. He wanted that kit badly. He decided to open a lemonade stand and earn the money himself. Before he squeezed a single lemon, he knew he must learn to set a clear money goal, plan a budget, save carefully, and track every step. His adventure in planning had begun.
Sam sat at the kitchen table with a clean notebook and a pencil. Step one of reaching any money goal is to name the goal and write down its exact cost. He wrote in large letters: Buy the human body science kit for thirty pounds. He added a target date eight weeks away. Writing the goal made it feel real. He remembered that explorers did the same kind of planning. Captain James Cook prepared for long Pacific voyages in the seventeen sixties and seventies by listing every supply he would need. Cook could not simply hope for the best. Sam smiled. A lemonade goal was smaller than a voyage, yet the idea was identical. Clear goal, clear cost, clear deadline. Without those three facts, a budget cannot even start.
