A peek inside
Zara stood beside her science fair table, curly hair tucked under a safety goggles strap, lab coat a little too big. A small torch, two flat mirrors, and a clear triangular prism waited in a neat row. Her big question was simple and exciting. How does light really move, bounce, and bend? She wanted judges and friends to see real proof, not just pretty posters. Tonight she would show that light travels in straight lines, reflects from shiny surfaces, and splits into colours through a prism. She took a deep breath. Science felt like a treasure hunt with rules you could test. Her first step was understanding the path light takes before it ever hits a mirror.
Light leaves a lamp or the Sun and travels outward in straight lines called rays. It does not curve around corners on its own the way sound can sneak through a doorway. That is why a wall can block a bright beam and leave a dark patch behind it. Zara flicked on her torch in the dim school hall and pointed it at the far wall. A bright spot appeared exactly where the beam aimed. When she tilted the torch, the spot jumped to a new place along a straight path. No wiggles. No loops. Just a clean line from the bulb to the wall. Understanding straight-line travel was the foundation of her whole project.
