A peek inside
Nora stood at the stony edge of a bright, cold spring high among the peaks, her green coat bright against the mist. The children gathered close as the water slipped over moss and rock, beginning its long journey toward the distant sea. “Every great river has a source,” Nora said, smiling, “and many sources sit high in mountain ranges like this one.” She tapped her boot on the ancient stone. “But mountains were not always here. Today we will discover how a whole mountain range can rise from the ground beneath our feet.” Wind tugged at their scarves while curiosity lit every face.
From a ridge above the spring, Nora pointed across a line of jagged summits that stretched farther than the eye could easily follow. “A mountain range is a long chain of peaks and valleys formed by the same powerful forces,” she explained. The children felt very small beside walls of rock that seemed older than time itself. Nora reminded them that the ground under the whole planet is not one solid piece. Earth’s outer shell is broken into enormous slabs. Those slabs, she said, hold the first secret of how ranges like this one came to stand so tall.
