A peek inside
Remy bounced into the kitchen, curly hair springing with each step, backpack thumping against the chair. Mum smiled and announced the Family Budget Challenge: learn how households use money wisely for a whole week. A shiny coin with tiny arms and a bright smile popped up beside the fruit bowl. "Hello! I'm Penny, your guide to saving, spending, and budgeting," she chirped. Penny explained that needs are things we must have to stay safe and healthy, while wants are nice extras. The human digestive system needs nourishing food broken down into energy and nutrients, just as a family must budget for groceries before toys.
Remy opened a notebook labelled Money Map and chewed the end of a pencil. Penny stretched her tiny arms and said families receive income, which is money earned from work or other sources. Without income, there is nothing to spend or save, so understanding it comes first. Explorer Ferdinand Magellan planned voyages that needed funding and careful supply lists before ships left port. Remy wrote income at the top and listed pocket money plus Mum's wages. Just as blood in the circulatory system carries oxygen and nutrients through the body, income carries the power to meet needs when managed well.
