A peek inside
Jordan hurried into the Year Six classroom, curly dark hair bouncing, grinning at the busy chatter of friends. The headteacher had posted a notice: the school could fund only one new after-school club, yet pupils wanted very different things. Some begged for lessons on the circulatory system, learning how the heart pumps blood to every organ. Others longed to study real explorers and significant events from history. Jordan felt the tension rise as voices overlapped and no single idea pleased everyone. When a whole community wants different paths and resources are limited, people need a fair way to choose together.
At first someone suggested the headteacher simply pick the club alone and end the argument quickly. Jordan frowned, cheerful face turning thoughtful, and asked whether one person should silence dozens of other ideas. A community holds a vote so power does not rest with a single voice, no matter how kind or clever that person may be. Everyone who belongs deserves a chance to influence shared decisions that affect daily life at school. Voting turns many private opinions into one public choice that the group can accept. Fairness, not speed, is why communities pause to cast ballots.
