A peek inside
Jasper tugged on his green hoodie and grinned at the busy corridor outside the tuck shop hatch. He was eleven, with messy brown hair and bright trainers that squeaked on the polished floor. Today the older pupils had chosen him to help run the school shop for the whole lunch hour. Bright packets of fruit, juice cartons and healthy snacks lined the shelves under clear price labels. A simple cash tin sat ready beside a notebook called the ledger. Jasper felt a flutter of excitement mixed with nerves. Running a real shop meant careful counting, honest change and smart choices. His teacher had said the class needed money for a science museum trip. Every careful sale would help. Jasper took a deep breath and opened the hatch with a cheerful hello.
Before the first customer arrived, Jasper studied the price list carefully. In the United Kingdom, money uses pounds and pence. One pound equals one hundred pence, written with a decimal point like one pound fifty as one point five zero pounds. A carton of apple juice cost zero pounds and sixty pence. A packet of raisins cost zero pounds and forty five pence. A cheese wrap cost one pound twenty. Jasper practised saying the amounts aloud so the numbers would stick. He learned that the digits after the decimal point show the pence. Two digits after the point keep the money clear and fair. Understanding decimal currency was the first tool every tuck shop tycoon needed. Without it, costs and change would quickly become a muddle.
