A peek inside
Welcome to the planetarium! Stella stood beneath the glowing dome in her star-speckled jacket and smiled at the audience. Tonight she would reveal why day turns into night and why the seasons change across the year. The lights dimmed until thousands of stars filled the curved ceiling above every seat. Stella explained that Earth is a spinning planet that travels around the Sun on a long yearly path. She invited everyone to lean back and follow the journey of light and shadow that shapes the days and seasons we know.
Stella spun a bright model of Earth slowly on its invisible stand. Day and night happen because Earth rotates, or turns, all the way around once every twenty-four hours. The side of Earth facing the Sun bathes in daylight, while the side turned away rests in darkness. As the planet keeps turning, places that were dark slowly roll into the sunlight and morning begins. Places that were bright roll away from the Sun and evening arrives. That steady spin is the simple reason our clocks divide each day into night and day.
