A peek inside
Charles Darwin served as the naturalist on the HMS Beagle during its voyage around the world. In eighteen thirty two the ship reached the waters off South America. Darwin felt excited each morning when he prepared his notebook and collecting tools. He wore simple clothes from the eighteen thirties that allowed him to move freely on deck. Every day brought fresh sights of waves, birds, and distant shores. Darwin wondered why different regions held such varied forms of life. He recorded his thoughts carefully so he could study them in quiet moments later. The steady motion of the ship and the salt air helped him think deeply about the natural world around him.
The Beagle stopped along the South American coast where Darwin explored rocky shores. He noticed layers of rock that contained ancient remains of animals. These fossils looked similar to creatures still living nearby yet they were clearly different. Darwin felt a quiet thrill as he gently lifted each fossil from the ground. He compared the shapes of bones to modern animals he had seen on the mainland. Some fossils belonged to large animals that no longer existed anywhere. This discovery made him question how living things might have changed across long periods of time. Darwin packed the fossils safely for the return journey.
