A peek inside
Kit tugged on her goggles and surveyed the cluttered workbench in her workshop. Today she would build a simple electrical circuit and make a small bulb glow with light. She knew that electricity could travel through certain materials when they formed a complete path, and she was determined to understand how. On the table lay a battery, copper wires, a tiny bulb, and a switch waiting to be connected. Kit remembered that curious people throughout history had asked the same questions about invisible energy. With a deep breath, she reached for the battery and began her investigation.
Kit examined the battery and learned it was the power source for her circuit. Inside, chemical reactions push electrical energy toward one terminal and pull it from the other, creating a difference that can drive a flow. She thought about her own circulatory system, where the heart pumps blood through a continuous loop of vessels so every part of the body receives what it needs. In a similar way, a battery can push electric current around a complete circuit. Without a source of energy, nothing would move through the wires at all. Kit carefully noted the positive and negative ends before choosing her first wire.
