A peek inside
At the modern science museum, Dr. Breez welcomed a group of curious children into the Breath Power workshop. She wore a bright lab coat and a colourful stethoscope that hung around her neck. Short curly hair bounced as she smiled and waved everyone closer to the long tables. Models of lungs stood ready beside soft mats and clear measuring tools. Today the children would explore how the respiratory system takes in oxygen and delivers it to the blood. They would also measure their own breathing rates and lung capacity. Dr. Breez explained that every breath keeps the body working, especially when muscles need extra energy. The children put on visitor badges and listened carefully. Science felt exciting when they could test real ideas on themselves. The workshop was about to begin.
Dr. Breez asked everyone to place a hand gently on their chest and notice the rise and fall. She said the respiratory system is the set of body parts that brings air in and moves gases where they are needed. Oxygen from the air must reach the blood so cells can release energy from food. Without steady oxygen delivery the body cannot keep moving or thinking well. Carbon dioxide, a waste gas made by cells, must leave the blood and travel out of the body. The system works all day and night without us thinking about it. During rest the job is quiet and steady. During activity the job becomes much busier. Understanding these steps helps people stay healthy and active. The children nodded, ready to follow the path of one single breath.
