A peek inside
Jules spread a blank world outline across the kitchen table and opened a battered satchel stuffed with sketch maps. The Big Map Project was due next week, and the goal was clear: label every continent, every ocean, and the major features that shape our planet. Continents are the Earth’s great landmasses, and oceans are the vast saltwater bodies that surround them. Jules traced the empty shapes with a pencil, already sensing how big the world really was. “If I learn these carefully,” Jules whispered, “the whole map will finally make sense.” The first step was simple but huge—name the seven continents.
Jules began with Asia, the largest continent, stretching from the frozen Arctic fringe to tropical islands and holding the world’s highest peaks, the Himalayas. Next came Africa, home to the Sahara Desert and the long Nile River, a land of enormous variety from rainforest to grassland. Europe sat northwest of Asia, smaller in area yet packed with mountain ranges like the Alps and many peninsulas reaching into surrounding seas. Jules sketched rough coastlines and wrote each name in clear letters so the facts would stick. Three continents already felt real, not just words in a textbook. The satchel maps suddenly looked less mysterious and more like invitations to keep going.
