A peek inside
Captain Vela adjusted her explorer coat and goggles inside the humming laboratory. Today she would shrink smaller than a grain of sand and sail through the human body's living seas, just as Ferdinand Magellan once dared the unknown oceans of Earth. Magellan's expedition left Spain in fifteen nineteen with a bold dream: find a westward path to the Spice Islands. Vela tapped her mini-ship and grinned. "If Magellan could map the world by courage," she said, "we can learn why that voyage still matters while we chart the body." The shrink ray glowed, and adventure began.
Tiny now, Captain Vela steered into a warm tunnel that was the mouth and throat, beginning the digestive voyage. Food here is broken down so the body can take in nutrients, much as explorers sought valuable spices and goods. Magellan wanted a western sea route because eastern paths were long, costly, and controlled by rival traders. His five ships carried sailors ready to risk everything for knowledge and trade. Vela watched muscles guide the journey downward and thought of crews trusting their captain. Both missions needed careful planning before the hardest waters appeared ahead.
