A peek inside
Reed tugged the zipper of his bright studio hoodie and spun slowly in his chair, curly hair bouncing under the warm lamps. Around him stood guitars, drums, and a shiny trumpet waiting on stands. He had always loved making music, yet a bigger question nagged at him today. How did a tiny pluck, blow, or bang turn into a sound that could fill a whole room? Reed decided he would find out by testing every instrument and watching what truly moved. Sound, he suspected, began with something he could almost feel with his fingertips.
Reed pressed his palm against the body of an acoustic guitar and plucked a single string. The string blurred as it moved back and forth so quickly that his eyes could barely follow. Under his hand he felt a gentle buzz racing through the wood. That rapid back-and-forth motion is called a vibration, and every sound begins when something vibrates. Without vibration there is simply silence, no matter how hard a musician tries. Reed grinned, realizing the first secret of sound was already humming against his skin.
