A peek inside
Kai adjusted his glowing goggles and peered through the thick glass wall of the underwater research dome. Outside, bright fish swam past coral towers that pulsed with soft color. It was the year 2147, and this busy city under the sea glowed thanks to special solar pearls. Kai was an eight-year-old inventor who loved building clever gadgets. His tool belt jingled with every step. A shimmering blue shape floated up beside him. It was Lumin, his holographic whale friend. Light patterns danced across Lumin's big gentle body. Good morning, Kai! Lumin called in a warm voice. The dome looks wonderful today. Kai smiled wide. The solar pearls catch sunlight from far above and keep every light shining down here. He pointed up at the golden orbs floating near the ceiling. Yet a tiny flicker made him pause and wonder.
Suddenly the lights along the walkway dimmed for a long second. People in the dome stopped and looked up with worried faces. Kai felt his heart jump. Lumin swam in a tight circle, his shimmer patterns flashing faster. Oh no, the solar pearls are leaking energy! Lumin said. Kai ran to the main control panel and pressed glowing buttons. Screens showed three large pearls near the outer tunnels dripping soft golden sparks into the water. If they keep leaking, the whole city will go dark forever, Kai whispered. He tightened his goggles and checked his tools. We have to fix them before night falls. Lumin nodded and glowed brighter. I can guide you through the tunnels. Kai took a deep breath. Adventure was calling, and he would not let his home fade away. They hurried toward the airlock together.
