The great telescope lay shattered across the lunar dust like a burst of silver stars. Fern stood at the edge of the wreckage, fists clenched, copper-streaked overalls glinting under the pale moon-light. Somewhere behind her, Grimble's team was already scrambling for pieces. "First team to rebuild it wins," she whispered. She clutched the largest gear - the master gear - tight against her chest.
Fern's teammate Dimm bounced on his heels, springs jangling in every pocket. "We found six pieces already, Fern!" he said, amber goggles flashing. Across the workshop floor, Grimble sorted his own pile with long, careful fingers, grease-smudged cheeks creased in concentration. Neither team looked at the other. The eclipse clock on the wall ticked louder than Fern's heartbeat.
