A peek inside
In the great market city, where marigold garlands hung like golden curtains and copal smoke drifted sweet and slow, lived a girl named Xochitl. Her fingers were always stained - crimson from cochineal beetles, indigo from crushed leaves, yellow bright as sunlight. She hid them inside her rebozo whenever strangers looked.
Xochitl's mother had been the finest dye-maker in the market. Now Xochitl ground the pigments alone, whispering the old songs her mother had taught her. "Colour carries feeling," Mama used to say. Xochitl wasn't sure what that meant. She only knew her paints felt warm, almost alive, beneath her palms.
