A peek inside

High above the quiet peaks of Pine Ridge, a bright rainbow stretched across the morning sky. From its glowing middle tumbled a small boy with messy cloud-white hair and wide curious eyes. He landed softly in a meadow of wildflowers, blinking at the mountains all around him. Birds chirped. A gentle breeze touched his face. The village below looked peaceful, with wooden houses and tidy gardens. Juni sat up and brushed petals from his knees. He did not remember much, only the soft whoosh of falling and the smell of rain. A goat wandered close and sniffed his sleeve. Juni smiled a shy smile. He felt safe here, though everything was new. Somewhere far above, a fluffy silver-edged cloud watched him with quiet interest, waiting for the right moment to float nearer.

The people of Pine Ridge found Juni sitting among the flowers and welcomed him with warm bread and kind questions. He spoke softly and kept his eyes on the ground at first, but the village children soon tugged him toward the little schoolhouse on the hill. Miss Lila, the teacher, gave him a seat by the window where he could see the sky. At recess the other pupils ran and shouted, yet Juni preferred to watch the drifting clouds. One girl offered him a red apple. He accepted it with a tiny nod. That afternoon the class planned a picnic for the next sunny day. Everyone cheered. Juni felt a flutter of hope in his chest. Maybe this mountain village could become home. Outside the window, the same fluffy cloud drifted closer, silver edges shining.
