A peek inside
Morning light spilled across Maple Grove School as children hurried inside with lunch boxes and bright backpacks. At the gate stood a quiet girl named Elara, eight years old and new in town. Her cloak shimmered with tiny living fireflies that blinked soft gold and green. She held her sketchbook tight against her chest and took a slow breath. The schoolyard buzzed with laughter and skipping feet. Elara felt her stomach flutter like the lights on her cloak. She wanted a friend, yet her words stayed small. A boy with messy hair and paint-stained overalls waved from the steps. His name was Jasper, and his smile was wide and warm. Elara managed a tiny wave back. The fireflies glowed a little brighter, as if they sensed adventure waiting just beyond the classroom door.
Inside the cheerful art room, jars of brushes lined the shelves and sunlight painted squares on the wooden floor. Miss Lark clapped her hands and welcomed everyone to free drawing time. Jasper slid into the seat beside Elara and grinned. His overalls already held blue fingerprints from last week. Elara opened her sketchbook to a clean white page. She drew a tiny fox with curious eyes and a fluffy tail, pressing soft lines with her favorite pencil. The fireflies on her cloak twinkled faster. Jasper leaned closer, fascinated. Suddenly the fox sketch shimmered. Color rose from the paper like morning mist. The little fox stretched, yawned, and hopped right off the page onto the desk. Jasper gasped with pure delight. Elara’s eyes grew round. Her secret gift had woken up in front of someone else for the very first time.
