A peek inside
Hattie is a plump speckled hen with a red comb. She wants to count her chicks one by one. She finds the first chick and says one.
And then Hattie peeks behind the water trough. A second fluffy chick peeps out, and she points and says two. Two chicks so far.
And then Hattie checks the soft straw nest. A third little chick wiggles into view, and she smiles and says three. Now three chicks are counted.
And then Hattie looks under the wooden fence. A fourth chick hops into the sun, and she counts carefully and says four. Four chicks are here.
And then Hattie hears a tiny peep by the barn. A fifth chick runs over to her, and she says five out loud. She has counted five chicks.
And then Hattie spots a chick near the corn. The sixth chick pecks at a yellow seed, and she points and says six. Six chicks are with her.
And then Hattie walks past the red tractor. A seventh chick scurries after her feet, and she counts and says seven. Seven little chicks follow her.
