A peek inside
Ewan sat cross-legged outside the family tent as evening settled over the misty Scottish glen. He wore a green wool sweater and sturdy hiking boots, his brown hair messy from the long walk in. His parents stirred stew over the campfire while his little sister sorted smooth river stones into neat piles. Ewan loved the quiet corners of wild places, the way mist curled around ancient oaks and the soft rush of the nearby stream. He packed his rucksack with a water bottle, a notebook, and his bright yellow torch, checking each item twice. “Tomorrow I will spot something rare,” he whispered, smiling at the first stars. The air smelled of pine and damp earth. He listened to night birds calling from the ridges and felt completely at home. His family laughed softly together. Ewan closed his notebook and watched the firelight dance on the tent walls.
Long after his parents and sister fell asleep, Ewan woke to pure stillness. Midnight had arrived, and the glen glowed faintly under a clear sky full of stars. He slipped from his sleeping bag, pulled on his boots, and lifted the tent flap with careful fingers. Cool mist brushed his face as he stepped outside and clicked on his torch. The beam cut a narrow path through ferns and mossy stones. He had promised himself only a short walk to the stream and back. “Just a look,” he murmured, heart beating faster with every quiet step. Foxfire fungi glowed pale green along a fallen log, drawing his eye deeper into the trees. The soft light seemed to invite him forward. Ewan adjusted his rucksack straps and followed the strange glow, leaving the safe circle of the tent behind. The stream sounded closer now.
