A peek inside
The moor stretched wide and quiet under a sky full of sharp stars. Bramble tugged his red anorak tighter as the chill wind brushed his curly hair. Beside him, Hazel clicked on her torch and opened her notebook, ready to record every detail. Their parents slept soundly in the family tent behind them. The three friends had waited all evening for this midnight nature walk. Soft heather crunched under their boots. Somewhere far off, a night bird called once and fell silent again. Bramble felt a spark of excitement mix with the cold air in his lungs. Hazel pointed toward a faint path of pale light that seemed to rise from the ground itself. They exchanged a look full of daring and stepped forward together into the open dark.
The strange glow grew stronger as they walked. Tiny clusters of mushrooms shone with a soft green light along the edges of the path. Hazel knelt and wrote foxfire in careful letters, her braids swinging forward. Bramble crouched beside her, eyes wide. He had read about foxfire once but never imagined it would look so alive. The light pulsed gently, almost like breathing. It guided them deeper across the moor where the heather grew taller and the ground dipped into hidden hollows. Their torch beam seemed unnecessary now. The mushrooms themselves lit the way in quiet silver green. Bramble whispered that it felt like the moor was inviting them somewhere special. Hazel nodded, heart beating faster with every careful step they took.
