A peek inside
Before the sun cleared the jagged peaks, Norbu tightened his thick wool cloak and led Dawa along the crumbling edge of the glacier. The young herder’s boots crunched over blue ice that groaned like an old door. Dawa, his shaggy white yak, huffed warm breath into the thin air and pressed close, kind dark eyes watching every careful step. Far below, their village slept under a blanket of frost, unaware of the strange light gathering on the ice walls ahead. Norbu felt both thrill and worry twist together in his chest. Something about this dawn felt different, as if the mountain itself was waking up to speak.
As the first gold light spilled across the glacier, the ice walls began to change. Smooth frozen faces pushed outward from the blue crystal, each one carved by melting and freezing through countless winters. Norbu stopped so suddenly that Dawa nearly bumped into him. Portraits of elders stared out with solemn, living eyes—yak herders from generations past, their features sharp and familiar. Wind whistled through the cracks, and for a heartbeat Norbu thought he heard whispered names. He reached out, heart hammering, and touched the cold cheek of the nearest face. The ice felt almost warm beneath his fingers.
