A peek inside
Amara sat on the wooden floor of her new bedroom and tugged open a cardboard box. She had warm brown skin, curious eyes, and a soft foreign accent that made ordinary words sound special. The Victorian house creaked whenever the wind pushed against its old walls. Outside the tall window, the unfamiliar street glowed under a thin moon. Amara pulled out her favorite books and stacked them carefully on a dusty shelf. She loved stories about brave explorers who found friends in strange places. Her sneakers squeaked as she crossed the room to hang a poster of a bright blue ocean. The floorboards groaned under her steps like they were welcoming her. Somewhere down the block, she heard laughter and the quick slap of sneakers on pavement. Amara paused and tilted her head toward the sound.
Amara pressed her nose to the cool glass and peered into the dark. A group of kids darted between the porch lights and the tall hedges. One boy with messy hair held a bright flashlight that sliced yellow beams through the night. He shouted and the others scattered, laughing as they ducked behind mailboxes and trees. Amara watched them weave and chase, their sneakers flashing under the beams. Flashlight tag looked like pure adventure. She wondered if those kids would notice a new girl who spoke with a different accent. Would they stop and stare? Would they keep playing without her? Her stomach fluttered like a moth against a lamp. She stepped back from the window and twisted her fingers together. The cardboard boxes waited, but the game outside called louder than any packing list.
