The morning sun warmed the dusty hills behind the natural history museum as Juni tightened her messy ponytail and tugged on her gloves. At only eight years old she was the youngest volunteer on the fossil dig, yet she moved with quiet purpose. Dirt already smudged her cheeks from helping carry trays of tools. Around her, older students and scientists knelt in shallow trenches, tapping gently at ancient stone. Dr. Vale, the kind museum paleontologist in the fossil patterned vest and round glasses, waved her over with a warm smile. Today you work in sector four, he said. Stay patient and notice every detail. Juni nodded, heart thumping with excitement. She had dreamed of this dig for months, imagining secrets hidden just beneath the surface of the ordinary looking ground.
Juni settled into a quiet corner of the trench where the soil looked pale and chalky. She lifted a soft brush and began sweeping in slow, careful circles the way Dr. Vale had taught her. Tiny clouds of dust rose and drifted away on the breeze. At first she found only pebbles and scraps of broken shell. Then her brush snagged on something denser, a rounded lump half buried and stubbornly clinging to the earth. It looked like an ordinary rock, nothing special at all. Still, something about its shape made her pause. She brushed again, slower this time, watching grit fall away grain by grain. The rock seemed to glow a faint creamy white under the dirt. Curiosity sparked bright in her chest. She leaned closer, holding her breath as if the ground itself might whisper a secret.
