A peek inside
Mia knelt beside another cardboard box in her new bedroom and pulled out a stack of books. Sunlight poured through the window and painted warm squares across the wooden floor. Outside, the quiet cul-de-sac of Maple Lane stretched in a neat circle of identical brick houses with tidy lawns. She heard laughter drift over the garden fence and peeked out. Three kids stood on tiptoe, staring curiously toward her window. One boy wore a bright baseball cap. A girl with long braids pointed and whispered. Mia's curly dark hair fell across her curious eyes as she ducked back. Everything felt strange and new. She wondered if anyone would ever knock on her door. Her stomach fluttered with both hope and worry. Unpacking suddenly seemed much harder than before.
Later that afternoon Mia carried an empty box to the recycling bin near the front gate. The neighborhood kids had started a lively game of tag across the shared green space in the center of the cul-de-sac. The girl with braids called out rules in a clear, confident voice while the freckled boy in the baseball cap darted between parked bikes. Mia paused with her hand on the latch, watching their easy laughter. She wanted to step forward and say hello, yet her feet stayed rooted. A soft breeze carried the smell of cut grass and distant barbecue smoke. She remembered her old street and the friends she had left behind. Starting over felt enormous. Still, something about Maple Lane already tugged at her. She took one small step closer to the fence and waited.
