A peek inside

Juno knelt on the warm sandstone ledge above the crashing waves, her messy braid swinging as she worked. The coastal fossil cliffs smelled of salt and damp rock, and seabirds wheeled in the bright morning sky. She loved every quiet hour spent here, gently brushing grit from ancient shells and bone fragments left by creatures that once soared. Today she helped the cliff crew map a new layer, humming under her breath while her wide eyes searched for the tiniest ridge or swirl. A soft breeze tugged at her jacket. Far below, tide pools glittered. Juno pressed her fingertips to the stone and smiled. This was her favorite place in the whole world. Something small and pale caught the light near her knee. She leaned closer, curious but calm, ready for another ordinary find.

Juno eased her soft brush across the sandstone. Grain by grain the rock fell away until a slender wing-bone appeared, perfectly preserved. The moment sunlight touched it, the bone pulsed with a gentle inner light, soft blue and gold. She froze, heart tapping fast. The glow brightened, then dimmed, then brightened again like a slow breath. “Hello?” she whispered, half laughing at herself. The light answered with a warmer pulse. Tiny cracks of sandstone loosened all around the bone. Juno scooted back on her heels, watching in wonder. A small shape began to lift free, no larger than a house cat, wings folded tight. The glowing fossil settled onto the ledge beside her boot and tilted what might have been a head. Juno’s brush slipped from her fingers and clattered softly.
