A peek inside
On a golden afternoon in bustling 1920s Harlem, Riff darted between streetcars with a stack of newspapers under one arm. His shiny tap shoes clicked a cheerful rhythm against the cracked sidewalk, earning smiles from shopkeepers and hurried strangers alike. He was only twelve, yet he already knew every corner from Lenox Avenue to the Apollo’s glowing marquee. Suddenly a strange melody rose through a rusted sidewalk grate, warm and wild as summer lightning. Riff froze mid-step, heart thumping louder than his taps. Those forgotten jazz notes seemed to call his name.
Curiosity tugged harder than any headline he had ever shouted. Riff knelt beside the grate and pressed his ear to the iron bars, breathing in the scent of roasted peanuts and distant perfume. Below him, a trumpet soared and a piano answered like old friends trading secrets. He had heard jazz spilling from open windows before, but never music that felt hidden on purpose. Swallowing his nerves, he traced the sound along the curb until he found a narrow cellar door painted the color of midnight. His taps whispered once against the stone step. Then he pushed.
