A peek inside
The old green truck rattled to a stop beside the glassy lake, and Aspen pressed her freckled nose against the dusty window. Mountains rose like quiet giants behind a thick curtain of pine trees, their peaks brushed with late afternoon gold. Ridge climbed out first, his flannel shirt sleeves rolled up and his warm beard catching the breeze. Brook hopped down in her bright yellow boots, already laughing at the way the gravel crunched under her feet. Aspen slung her backpack higher on her shoulders and breathed in the sharp scent of cedar and cool water. This was the family camping trip she had counted down to for weeks, and every detail felt bigger and brighter than she had imagined.
Ridge spread the faded blue tarp between two sturdy pines while Aspen and Brook wrestled with the tent poles that seemed determined to spring apart. Brook giggled each time a pole snapped free, her yellow boots stomping in the soft earth as she chased them. Aspen studied the instruction sheet with serious eyes, determined to prove she could help like a real explorer. Their dad’s deep chuckle rolled across the clearing as he guided their hands and praised every small victory. Slowly the tent rose, crooked at first, then steady and proud against the mountain backdrop. When the last stake sank into the ground, the three of them stood back and cheered as if they had built a fortress.
