A peek inside
Jori sat on her bed with curly hair loose and hummed the opening notes of her favorite song. Sunlight spilled across the posters on her walls, and her backpack leaned against the chair. She loved singing more than anything, especially when the house felt quiet and no one waited to clap or stare. Tonight the school talent show would fill the auditorium with families and friends. Her sparkly dress hung on the closet door, catching little bits of light whenever she moved. Down the hall she heard the soft tap of drumsticks on a practice pad. Tate, her new stepbrother, had moved in only two months ago, and already he practiced every afternoon. Jori pressed her palms together and whispered the chorus one more time. Could she walk onto that stage without her voice disappearing?
The school hallway buzzed with last-minute rehearsals when Jori and Tate pushed through the double doors. Parents held cameras along the walls, and a dancer stretched beside a boy balancing a magic hat. Jori followed the paper signs toward backstage, her hands twisting the fabric of her skirt. Inside the wings the air smelled of dust and floor polish, and voices bounced from the high beams. Tate spun a pair of wooden drumsticks between his fingers and gave her a warm smile. “We sound solid when we practice at home,” he said. “Tonight will feel the same.” Jori nodded, yet her throat already felt tight as rope. The stage manager waved a clipboard and called for quiet. Jori’s name sat near the end of the list, right after the comedy sketch. She tried to swallow and found she could not.
