A peek inside
In the quiet library dome of the time-dilated asteroid habitat, twelve-year-old historian Mira scrolled through glowing archive crystals. Soft lights traced the curved metal walls while a gentle hum of air recyclers filled the space. She wore a plain light grey short-sleeve t-shirt, dark charcoal trousers, tan work boots, and her brown leather multi-pocket tool belt holding metal wrenches and tools. Dust motes drifted lazily in the low gravity. The habitat always smelled faintly of ozone and ancient rock. Braided hair framed her freckled face as she smiled at a faded survey map. She loved uncovering the rock’s hidden history more than any game. Outside the thick ports, stars waited in their strange stretched patterns. Mira stood and floated down the corridor toward the observation window, eager for a better look before her next research shift.
Mira floated near the observation window of the asteroid habitat. Outside, stars stretched into soft lines because time ran strangely here. The floor tilted under her sneakers without warning. Lights flickered along the curved corridor. “Holo-Pops, the gravity just hiccuped again,” she said. A blue-tinted holographic grandfather with vintage spectacles shimmered into view beside her. “I felt that wobble too, Mira. The main generator is complaining louder than usual.” She tapped her wrist screen and frowned at the red alerts. “If it fails completely, everything loose will float into the walls. We need to reach the core before the next pulse.” Holo-Pops nodded and pointed down the long metal hall. “Race you to the service lift.”
