A peek inside
Lena crouched on the frost-covered launchpad of Orbital Station Horizon, tightening bolts on her homemade solar-winged probe. Wild copper hair stuck out under her goggles, and her tool belt held wrenches, wire, and spare circuits. She loved building things that could soar farther than anyone thought possible. Thin ice crystals sparkled across the metal rails while the station hummed softly above the blue curve of Earth. The probe’s wings folded neat and bright, ready for sunlight. “Almost ready, little flyer,” she whispered, checking every solar cell twice. A cool breeze from the air recyclers drifted past her sneakers. Today felt perfect for a first test flight. She rested one hand on the wing and smiled at the quiet sky.
Just as Lena flipped the activation switch, a sudden white flash lit the entire launchpad. Alarms chirped once and died. Every light on the station winked out. The probe’s wings fluttered and locked, half open. Gravity generators stuttered, and Lena felt her boots lift a few centimeters off the frost. “No, no, no - stay on!” she shouted, grabbing a handrail. The launchpad went dark except for the distant glow of Earth below. A small panelled drone drifted sideways out of a service hatch, its glowing orange eyes blinking in confusion. “Well, that was dramatic,” the drone said in a dry voice. “Power core just took a solar punch. Name’s Zorq. You broke my quiet shift.”
