High above the endless storm clouds, the great ark-city drifted like a stubborn island of metal and hope. Rook tightened the straps on her storm goggles and grinned at the wind tearing past the upper rails. At eleven years old she already knew every rusted ladder and hidden crawlway in the lower decks. Beside her, twelve-year-old Jettar checked the tools hanging from his battered belt. A pale lightning scar traced his left arm, a reminder of the day he had saved a failing generator. Below them the flooded levels groaned and sloshed. Somewhere down there, forgotten supplies waited for anyone brave enough to claim them. Today felt different. The air tasted of secrets.
They slipped through a half-sealed hatch into the dripping gloom of Deck Seventeen. Water lapped at their boots and cold mist curled around broken pipes. Rook held up a salvaged glow-stick, painting the walls green. Jettar knelt beside a sealed crate stamped with the old council mark. His clever fingers worked the lock open in seconds. Inside they found dried fruit packs and a cracked data slate that still flickered faintly. Rook wiped the screen clean. Strange maps bloomed across it, showing landmasses far larger than any ark platform. Jettar frowned. Those shapes did not match any chart they had ever studied in school. Something important had been left behind on purpose.
