A peek inside
Inside Habitat Dome Seven on the red dunes of Mars, eleven-year-old roboticist Zara hummed as she tightened a bolt on her homemade rover. The workshop smelled of warm metal and recycled air. Soft lights glowed along the curved walls while outside the thin wind whispered over endless sand. Zara’s dark utility belts held tools she had scavenged and rebuilt herself. She patted the rover’s weathered grey-brown frame and watched its front sensor lights flicker green. “Looking good, Rix,” she said with a grin. Her backpack rested nearby, ready for any afternoon test run across the nearby flats. Footsteps echoed from the living pods as colony life bustled gently around her. Zara stood, brushed dust from her orange-and-black patches, and reached up to settle her large dark-tinted goggles.
Zara tightened the straps on her goggles and pushed her wild dark curls back from her face. Her younger brother Kael lay pale and ill on his cot, breathing shallow breaths. The supply drone carrying his medicine had gone offline somewhere beyond the red dunes. A planet-wide dust storm was building on the horizon, swallowing the sky in rusty clouds. Zara knelt beside her homemade four-wheeled rover with solar panels and glowing sensors. “Rix, we have to find that drone before the storm hits,” she said. The rover’s sensors blinked in reply. She checked the tool kit one last time and opened the airlock. Outside, the Martian wind already tugged at her suit. She climbed onto Rix and steered toward the open dunes. The race had begun.
