A peek inside
The generation ship Aurora hummed softly as it drifted through the endless dark toward Proxima Centauri. Kale pushed off a bulkhead in his scuffed mag-boots, gliding down the zero-gravity corridor with practiced ease. Beside him, Nics flipped open a panel on her toolkit belt, already hunting for a loose coupling she swore she had heard rattling. Quiet Helix floated near the observation blister, eyes half-closed, listening to the ship the way other kids listened to music. None of them knew that something precious was already slipping away between the stars. Tonight, their ordinary patrol would change everything they believed about home.
In the common deck, old Mr. Venn stared at a family holo and frowned as if the smiling faces belonged to strangers. Kale noticed first; the man who always told the best launch-day stories now spoke in vague circles. Nics checked the power logs on her handheld and muttered that the life-support draw looked strangely low. Helix pressed a palm to the cool wall and whispered that the ship felt thinner somehow, emptier. A cold unease settled between the three friends as they watched another passenger forget the name of her own sister. Something aboard Aurora was quietly taking memories, and the kids decided they could not ignore it.
