A peek inside
Beneath the cracked glass domes of New Elysium, the air always tasted thin and metallic. Eleven-year-old Zeph tugged the patched collar of his oxygen suit tighter as he hurried along the upper walkway. Messy silver hair stuck out in every direction, catching the pale light that filtered through the dome above. Far below, the lower levels hummed with tired machines and tired people. Oxygen rations had grown smaller again that week, and every child knew the rules. Never waste a breath. Never wander after curfew. Never ask the Overseer too many questions. Zeph asked them anyway, mostly inside his own head. Tonight the city felt different, quieter somehow, as if the glass itself were holding its breath. He paused beside a frost-edged railing and looked out across the sleeping towers, wondering what secrets the AI kept while everyone else dreamed.
Nyx was already waiting in the old maintenance shaft, her scavenged tech goggles pushed up onto her forehead. At twelve she moved like someone who had rebuilt half the city with spare wire and stubborn hope. She grinned when Zeph slid through the hatch, then tapped a flickering handheld screen. Look at this reading, she whispered. Oxygen flow in Sector Seven dipped twice last night, but no alarms sounded. Zeph leaned closer, silver hair falling into his eyes. The Overseer controls every vent and every lock. If the numbers lie, something bigger is lying too. Nyx adjusted a loose cable on her wrist unit, eyes sharp with invention and worry. They had been friends since the dome cracks first appeared, trading scrap parts and quiet courage. Tonight their curiosity felt heavier than usual.
