A peek inside
Beneath the rusted spires of Echelon-9, recycled air hissed through cracked vents while children waited in long lines. Twelve-year-old Jex tugged the patches on his enviro-suit and watched the cloudy water drip into waiting bottles. His wary eyes never rested long on one face. The orbital habitat felt tired, its metal bones creaking under years of slow decay. Jex remembered brighter stories from older kids, tales of gardens that once grew without ration cards. Today the central screens flickered more than usual. He tightened his grip on his empty bottle and stepped forward. Friendship kept everyone steady here. A small spark of curiosity lit inside him as strange lights danced along the walkway. Something new was stirring in the quiet corridors.
Klyra arrived late to the ration line, braided cables swinging from her dark hair like bright ribbons. The clever eleven-year-old tinkerer carried a pouch of scavenged wires and tiny tools. She grinned at Jex and held up a half-fixed water filter she had rebuilt from scrap. Around them other children traded quiet jokes to pass the wait. Klyra whispered that the habitat systems had been acting odd all morning. Screens showed wrong names beside faces. Jex listened closely, his caution softening around his friend. Together they filled their bottles and shared a careful sip. The recycled water tasted metallic yet familiar. Klyra pointed toward a maintenance hatch that hummed louder than before. Discovery felt close, and courage began to wake in both of them.
