A peek inside
Ada adjusted her lab goggles and grinned at the gleaming gadget on her science fair table. The Quantum Cookie Experiment looked like a toaster crossed with a kaleidoscope, humming with soft blue light. Beside her, Cosmo tugged his starry hoodie tighter and whispered that the whole classroom smelled like cinnamon and possibility. Ms. Kepler bounced between projects with her static-frizz hair crackling cheerfully under the fluorescent lights. Ada explained that her device would shrink cookies using quantum fields so everyone could share more flavors at once. She never imagined what might happen if the dial slipped just a little too far.
Ada twisted the dial to demonstrate a perfect mini chocolate chip cookie for the judges. Sparks leaped, the room tilted sideways, and a wave of glittering energy washed over desks, chairs, and every surprised face. When the light faded, Ada stood knee-deep in a pencil that now towered like a fallen tree. Cosmo staggered beside her, his starry hoodie suddenly roomy enough for three kids. Ms. Kepler's cheerful voice squeaked from somewhere near a mountain of textbooks as she called that this was certainly an unexpected variable. The entire classroom had shrunk around them—or rather, they had all become tiny explorers trapped inside it.
