A peek inside
Rain drummed hard on Maple Street that Saturday morning, turning puddles into tiny silver lakes. Inside Jett's bright bedroom, two best friends sat on the carpet with their shared comic book open between them. Jett, curly hair springing in every direction and yellow raincoat still half zipped from an earlier dash outside, jabbed a finger at a colorful panel. I keep it this week, he insisted. You had it last time. Nico shoved his glasses up his nose, messy hair sticking out like startled feathers, and planted his red boots firmly. That is not the rule and you know it. We share everything. Voices climbed higher. Hands grabbed the same corner at once. Soft paper tore with a sound that felt louder than the storm. Both boys froze, cheeks burning, then stood without another word.
Jett stuffed the torn comic under his arm and stormed toward the back door, yellow raincoat flapping. Nico snatched his backpack and marched the opposite way through the kitchen, red boots squeaking on the tiles. Neither looked back. In the rush, Jett left his lucky blue marble on the windowsill where they always traded treasures. Nico left his small sketchbook of superhero drawings on the rug. The rain kept falling as if the sky itself felt the sudden chill between them. Each boy reached his own house two doors apart and slammed the door harder than needed. Windows fogged. The comic book lay forgotten on Jett's desk, its ripped edge curling like a frown. Both boys stared at blank walls and pretended the silence felt fine.
